Catherine Eaton’s Civil War Experiences

"When Will this Horrid War End!":
Lancaster's Catherine Eaton on the Civil War Home Front
by James B. Hibbard
During the American Civil War, Lancaster's Catherine Eaton and her four children remained on the home front when her husband, Samuel, left his position as local minister to become chaplain for the Seventh Wisconsin infantry regiment. When Samuel's expected absence of a few months became a three-year ordeal, Catherine felt a burden stronger than anticipated, and she became more than "the minister's wife." Representative of one of the first times in American history when females filled male roles, Catharine became the face of the church, an influential decision-maker in the community, and a source of support for those in Lancaster who were also coping with relatives who served in the war. Much of the story is documented in the original letters between Catherine and Samuel.

Larry Kaseman, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Parents Association, has this to say about the valued role of the public library as a resource for homeschoolers:
Homeschoolers rely heavily on public libraries. We also work hard to support them, including working for increased library funding. Thank you for all you do. We look forward to continuing and strengthening our working relationship with you.
