The Mineral Point Archives, also known as
"Mineral Point's Roots Cellar" is tucked down in the basement
of the Public Library, behind barred windows...

Since 1981, the Mineral Point Archives has been a resource of local history, with its subjects varying from architecture to zinc mining.

This reference collection began with a gift to the Mineral Point Public Library from Robert M. Neal, who, with Edgar Hellum, established the famous Pendarvis complex. The original Neal collection included 400 books, plus maps, local newspapers, photographs, letters, and other documents relating to the Mineral Point area.

These materials continue to form the nucleus of the MP Archives, while many historical and genealogical additions from individual donors find their way here every year.

Initial funding for the Archives was the result of the cooperative efforts of the library board, the city council, individual supporters, and a Friends of the Library group. Together, they provided the basic funds for renovation of the unoccupied space, formerly the city jail, below the Mineral Point Public Library in the Municipal Building.

Library staff manages the Archives, and Curator Mary Alice Moore and Assistant Curator Mary Faith Argall respond to inquiries about Mineral Point’s unique past from all parts of the United Sates and the world.

This repository of local history happily accepts donations of written or printed relevant material, and of course, visitors are always welcome in Mineral Point’s Roots Cellar .
