SWLS Outreach and Continuing Education Consultant

Would you enjoy consulting with public library directors and staff to provide meaningful continuing education opportunities? Could you help rural public libraries improve communications and messaging to the public and stakeholders? Can you organize outreach activities in collaboration with others? Do you care about improving public library access and inclusive services? Are you interested in engaging with library professional groups as you work to address practical support needs of our public libraries?

If any or all of these apply to you, consider applying for the full-time Outreach and Continuing Education Consultant position at Southwest Wisconsin Library System (SWLS).

Essential duties of the Outreach and Continuing Education Consultant include:

  • Ongoing consultation with member library directors and staff to develop and manage a calendar of continuing education offerings that support the needs of member libraries
  • Coordination of system outreach activities and assisting member libraries with communications and outreach activities
  • Providing libraries information and resources related to inclusive services 
  • Participation in professional library organizations and workgroups and collaboration with others inside and outside of the system region
  • Supporting the operations of the library system

Qualified candidates will have experience working at or with public libraries in a role related to continuing education, outreach, communications, or inclusive services, or be able to demonstrate competencies through relevant coursework and activities. A bachelor’s degree is required; preference will be given to applicants with master’s degrees from ALA-accredited programs or equivalent. Must have ability to work independently yet communicate effectively with coworkers and colleagues.

The Southwest Wisconsin Library System is a federated public library system that serves 28 municipal public libraries in five counties in southwest Wisconsin. SWLS headquarters are centrally located within the SWLS service area in modern office space on the edge of Fennimore, Wis. The majority of the system service area lies within the beautiful Driftless Region, including the scenic Lower Wisconsin River Valley and the dramatic bluffs and coulees along the Mississippi River.

SWLS has a history of being supportive and responsive to member libraries, and as it builds its team the system seeks to maintain an environment that highlights engagement, service, teaching and learning, and the fostering of connections and collaborations within the region and beyond to benefit public library services and patron experiences. While travel is anticipated for this position and some activities take place in evenings or on weekends, the majority of work is scheduled during normal weekday hours; consistent and punctual attendance is required. The system provides some positions the flexibility to work remotely part of the time, per policy, in coordination with overall workplace staffing needs. This is a full-time professional position and benefits currently include earned vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, Wisconsin Retirement System participation and the availability of health insurance, among others.


ILS Support and ILL Consultant

The Southwest Wisconsin Library System (SWLS) seeks to fill the full-time position of Integrated Library System (ILS) Support and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Consultant to provide member public libraries with support and training in the use of and maintenance of their shared ILS and associated databases as well as continuing the system’s interlibrary loan service.

Essential duties of the ILS Support and ILL Consultant include:

  • Ongoing consultation with member libraries to provide ILS support and training
  • Liaise with ILS vendor to resolve any technical problems and user concerns
  • Oversee the NetSouthwest database
  • Manage cataloging staff and workflow
  • Perform system ILL duties and advise on ILL topics
  • Generate activity statistics for system and library uses including annual reports
  • Participate in professional library organizations and workgroups and collaborate with others inside and outside of the system region
  • Support the operations of the library system
